There is a distinct, grounding rhythm to life in the British countryside. Long before the sun peaks over the horizon, the paddocks are blanketed in silver frost, the barn wood smells of sweet hay and morning mist, and the gentle, rhythmic chewing of farm animals fills the quiet air.
It was within this very setting — surrounded by open fields, honest daily routines, and animals with boundless personality — that the world of The Night Riders was born. Ashworth Farm is not an imaginary kingdom floating in distant clouds; it is rooted firmly in the texture, soil, and spirit of real countryside living.
Meeting the Real Personalities of Donkeys
For centuries, folklore has unfairly labelled donkeys as simple or merely “stubborn.” Anyone who has actually spent time working alongside them knows that nothing could be further from the truth. Donkeys are remarkably intelligent, intensely observant, and fiercely loyal once they trust you.
What humans often call stubbornness is usually a donkey carefully assessing a situation to determine if it is safe. That wonderful trait became the comedic and narrative backbone of our characters:
- Misty: Inspired by that wise, soulful donkey who always comes over to rest her muzzle in your palm when she senses you’ve had a difficult day.
- Myles: The inquisitive explorer who nudges open gate latches with his nose and thinks every bucket holds a treat.
- Doughnut: The youngest, whose sheer zest for life causes him to kick up his heels and sprint in circles for the pure joy of running.
- Noodles: The elder statesman who has seen it all, unimpressed by human plans and requiring very persuasive bribery (preferably mints or carrots) to take a single step in the rain.
From Evening Chores to Midnight Magic
The concept for the series began during quiet bedtime storytelling with my own children. After tucking them in, we would look out toward the darkened barns and wonder: “What do the animals get up to once the farmhouse lights go out?”
From that single question, the magic unfolded. What if a curious girl found an ancient star-shaped talisman hidden in the garden soil? What if that talisman allowed her to understand their language? And what if, on crisp, starlit nights, those four humble farm donkeys could lift their hooves from the grass and soar above the rooftops?
“The most convincing magic doesn’t happen in faraway mythical lands — it happens right on the edge of the familiar fields you walk every afternoon.”
By anchoring the fantasy in genuine farm life, young readers feel that Ashleigh’s world is within reach. They can almost smell the hay, hear Nelson’s collar jingle, and feel the cold December air rushing past as the Night Riders take flight.
